Hair Transplant Questions

The following questions are most frequently asked by would-be hair transplant patients. If you have any other questions, please contact us.

Why does hair transplantation work?

The scientific basis for why hair transplantation is successful is quite simple. Most men retain enough hair on the back of their scalp to supply what we call grafts. These grafts are distributed throughout the bald or thinning areas the head. Since the hair on the back of your head is programmed by your genes to grow throughout your lifetime, the hair donated from this area will continue to grow when relocated.

  • Does transplanted hair really grow?

Positively! Once your hair is moved from the donor area to the recipient area, it will take from 9to 13 weeks to start its re-growth. From this point, it will continue to grow at a rate of 1/4 to 1/2 -inch per month. Transplanted hair will always grow! It is your own hair so you can, cut, style, perm or color it, knowing it will grow for the rest of your life!

  • How is the transplant done?

Hair transplant is relatively simple procedure done in an outpatient facility. You are comfortably seated in one of our private treatment rooms and offered refreshments. You may select a video or choose to watch television, read or just relax during your procedure. The donor and recipient areas are anesthetized using local anesthesia. Healthy grafts of your own hair are then distributed throughout the bald or thinning areas in a design that mirrors the angel, and direction of your original hair pattern.

  • How long do the procedures take?

Hair transplantation may require three or more appointments, two to four weeks apart, depending on how many grafts you will require to achieve the density you desire. Each appointment takes approximately two hours. Because of the way the procedures are done today, in most cases you can resume your normal daily activities upon leaving our office.

  • What will it cost?

The cost of your hair restoration will depend upon the techniques used as well as the number of grafts necessary to achieve optimum results. During your consultation, we will thoroughly discuss fees based on the techniques used and the general estimate of grafts required to achieve the results you desire.

  • Can my hair restoration be completed in one session?

Usually not. During your initial consultation with the doctor, an estimated time frame will be given based on your individual goals. Once your hair grows to styling length, you and the doctor will meet for an evaluation in order to carefully plan any finishing touches that my be needed to achieve your goals.

  • My hair is just starting to thin, am I a candidate for hair transplantation?

Absolutely! Dr. Chambers has developed new techniques allowing grafts to be placed within existing hair without disturbing any of the hair that still remains. Because this technique is undetectable, you can replace hair as you are losing it. Having never gone completely bald, no one will ever know you have had a transplant.
